Before

After

Root canal treatment also known as endodontic treatment involves removing the nerve tissue (pulp) located in the center of the tooth or its roots (called as root canal). Root canal treatments can save a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. A root canal treated tooth will not feel hot or cold; however the tooth would still retain normal sensation to touch or pressure, thus maintaining your natural bite and healthy functioning of your jaws.

Reasons for Root Canal treatment

Deep tooth decay (Caries) very close to or involving the nerve
Trauma to the tooth.

Common Signs and Symptoms

  • Sharp shooting, throbbing pain which may be continuous.
  • Pain may increase on lying down
  • Pain on eating hot stuff
  • Sometimes pain may be associated with an abscess formation, showing an intraoral swelling or bulge in the gums.

Procedure

The Dentist removes the caries by drilling into the tooth crown and entering the root of the tooth, removing the infected pulp, cleaning the root canal, with specialized instruments (rotary files), irrigating and disinfecting. This is followed by filling or obturation of the root canals with biocompatible materials (gutta percha). The lost tooth structure is then filled with tooth colored material to restore the anatomy. The tooth is finally restored with crown.
