Sealant can be considered as preventive measure to protect your teeth from decay. It is a protective plastic coating, which is enforced to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. It acts as a shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.
Examining the teeth that should be sealed
Sealants are only enforced to the back teeth. On their biting surfaces these teeth are having ‘pits’ (small hollows) and ‘fissures’ (grooves). After examining them our dental team will tell you which teeth should be sealed, and verify whether the fissures are deep enough for sealing to help. Some teeth normally have deep grooves which will need to be sealed.
How long do pit and fissure sealants last?
Sealants usually last for many years, but our dental team will test them regularly to make sure that the seal is still perfect. Sealants damage over time, and if required our dental team will add or change some sealant to be sure that no decay can start underneath.
How Are Sealants Applied?
Applying sealant is a simple and painless process. It is time efficient process to seal each tooth. The application steps are as follows:
- First the teeth entirely cleaned.
- Each tooth is then dried, and cotton or another absorbent material is inserting around the tooth to have it dry.
- An acid solution is applied on the chewing surfaces of the teeth to roughen them up, which assists the sealant bond to the teeth.
- The teeth are then cleansed and dried.
- The sealant is then painted onto the chewing surface of teeth, where it binds straightly to the tooth and hardens. A specific curing light is used to help the sealant harden.
Defining Age group for Sealants
Sealants are often enforced as soon as the first permanent teeth start to come over. This is normally between 6 and 7 years of age. The rest are normally sealed as any time between 11 and 14 years of age.
The role of Dental selant
A dental sealant is a clear or white, liquid-plastic material enforced on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This plastic resin binds into the depressions and grooves (pit and fissure) of the teeth surfaces forming them smooth and simple to clean by brushing.
The role of dental sealants is to act as a barrier, preventing the enamel from the acids formed by the bacteria of dental plaque. The use of pit and fissure sealants has been shown to scale down tooth decay and cavities by more than 50%.
Dental sealants are powerful in preventing pit and fissure.
To whom do I ask about the treatment?
If you would like to know more about the treatment, ask our dental team. They will tell you if fissure sealing will help your teeth, and if it is the right time to do it.
